Kaylin Ford and Whispering Melody AKA Wendy
"Easy girl..." Kaylin cooed as she stepped into the stall. The tall yanky yearling bobbed her up quickly as she stood in the furthest corner of the stall. "Its OK Wendy..." Kaylin said calmly looking at the black filly. Wendy's ears perked forward and her eyes seemed to flash, her totally attitude changing. She gave a delightful toss of her head, and pranced excitedly forward. Kaylin smiled as the filly realized who she was. Wendy was very fearful of strangers, thinking it was from a abusive past when she was horse-napped for a while. The filly nuzzled Kaylin's arm affectionately and lowered her head. Kaylin reached up and rubbed the filly's forehead, starching behind the ear where Wendy liked it the most. The filly snorted
softly when Kaylin stopped and clipped the lead rope to her halter. She rose her head, and held it high, glancing around as if to ask What are we doing? Kaylin patted the filly's black neck admiring the filly.
Wendy was out of Ebony Gold Lady, one of Kaylin's very first racers. Lady, her dam, wasn't much of a racehorse. She did get Best Grade Four one year, and was proving herself to be a great broodmare. Wendy is one of her last foals.
Kaylin lead the filly from her stall and towards a set of cross ties that was in the wash stall. The wash stall was across from a few of the two year old stalls. Wendy walked along side of Kaylin, looking around the barn, very alert of her surroundings. One of the weanlings kicked at the stall door as we walked by. Wendy's eyes grew big and she froze. She threw her head back and backed up a few steps. "Easy girl... Its Okay.. Its just Roi being a jerk..." Kaylin whispered as she stepped towards the filly. She reached out slowly trying to calm the filly down. Wendy snorted softly as she reached out to sniff. She took a little step forward and glanced over towards Le Roi's stall to see if it was going to happen again. The colt inside peered out of his stall and pinned his ears back. Wendy reached out towards him, but as she did he bolted to the back of his stall.
"Lets go Wendy.." Kaylin said and gave a gentle tug on the lead rope. The filly quietly followed her to the wash stall. Kaylin hooked her up to the cross ties. "Okay girlie..." She said and patted the filly's neck. She reached into one of the buckets and pulled out a brush. She started to brush the filly. Wendy was calm and didn't spook at all while Kaylin brushed her.
When Kaylin finished brushing the filly she decided to take her for a walk around the stable grounds. She unclipped the filly from the cross ties and lead her down the barn isle and out towards the paddocks. Kaylin knew of a trail that went behind the paddocks and came out by the practice track. She smiled, thinking Wendy would enjoy out of her stall. The filly followed along side of Kaylin, her head held high as she took in her surroundings. Her ears flickered. It was like she was taking in radar, her ears twitched and her head moved left to right as she looked around. "It's okay Wendy..." Kaylin said softly and she patted her neck. The filly seemed a bit calm with Kaylin.
They pair made their way between the two empty paddocks and up a dirt path. They stopped for a few minutes so Wendy could check out this log she thought for sure that was going to eat her. After a quick look over and a good bite at it she was happy with her self. She didn't care for the old log anymore. Kaylin smiled as they walked down the beaten path and came to a opening. There was a bench on the right hand side, to the left was a big opening with a beautiful view of the race track. Kaylin led the filly out the opening and stopped as she spotted a few horses training on the track. Wendy caught sight of them too. The filly watched with interested as the a few of the two year olds raced down the track and made their way down the back stretch. She didn't spook. Her ears perked forward and she pulled at the lead rope as she tired to get closer. She showed great interest in the racing. She didn't seem fearful of the horses running or any of the loud noises... Which was good Kaylin thought. She knew that the filly loved to run as that what she did most in her paddock when out with a few other yearling. She kept her distance from them and just ran.
After a few moments Kaylin led the filly back on the trail and walked her around for another half hour before heading back towards the barn. She put the filly away and gave her a few treats.
